Why doesn't my export work, or why does my Word file look wrong?
What to do when a chat or document export fails, the file can't be found, or the Word file doesn't look as expected.

Symptoms
You exported a chat or downloaded a document, but no file was saved, or the Word file does not display as expected. You may see one of the following messages in the corner of the screen:
Or you see no message at all, but:
The Export or Download button is greyed out.
You clicked Export chat and can't find the file.
The Word file opens, but your messages are right-aligned, the text is colored and underlined, the citation numbers differ from those in the chat, images are missing, or the font is different.
The downloaded document doesn't include the latest edits.
Applies to
Product: Noxtua (web app)
Platform: Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers, Firefox, Safari, on Windows and macOS. The file opens in Microsoft Word 2007 or later, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
App area: Chat export (Export chat), the document panel (Download), and documents Noxtua created in an answer (Export → Download original / Copy as text). For Matrix exports to Excel, see the related articles.
Quick fix
Wait until Noxtua has finished replying. Export is unavailable while Noxtua may still be editing a document.
Reload the page, then export again from the chat menu (⋯) → Export chat, or from Download / Export in the document.
If no Save as window opens, look in your browser's Downloads folder.
This solves most export problems. If it doesn't, find the possible cause below.
Causes & solutions
The causes are listed from most to least common.
1. The file was saved, but not in the location you expected
How to tell: You saw no error, and either no Save as window opened or you closed it.
In Firefox and Safari, open your browser's Downloads list. Exports always go there.
In Chrome or Edge, a Save as window opens in the last folder you used. Check that folder.
If you closed the Save as window with Cancel, nothing was saved. Export again and click Save.
Check: Chrome and Edge show Saved to your computer after a successful save. In other browsers, the file appears at the top of the Downloads list.
2. Noxtua is still working on the document
How to tell: The Export button on the document card or the Download option in the document panel is grayed out.
Wait until Noxtua's reply has finished. Export stays disabled while the agent may still be editing.
If the document panel shows Loading document …, wait until the document appears. Download becomes available once it has loaded.
Click Export → Download again. Noxtua saves any pending edits first, so the file is up to date.
Check: The button is active, and the downloaded file contains the latest changes.
3. Tracked changes are showing in Word
How to tell: Text in the downloaded document is colored and underlined or struck through, with change bars or balloons in the margin.
This is expected. A document you download while editing keeps its tracked changes, so you or a colleague can still accept or reject them.
In Word, open the Review tab.
To read the document without markup, change All Markup to No Markup. This hides the markup while keeping the changes.
To make the changes permanent, click Accept → Accept All Changes. To undo them, click Reject → Reject All Changes.
Check: With No Markup or after accepting, the text appears in normal color. Note that some formatting changes (for example, a new heading style) show no balloon or change bar. Open the Reviewing Pane to see every change.
4. The chat export is laid out differently from the chat
How to tell: The Word file opens without errors, but it doesn't look like the chat on screen.
The chat export follows a fixed layout. These differences are by design:
If you need an image, download it separately from the chat.
To check a source, click its number in the text or open the chat in Noxtua.
Check: Every message from you and Noxtua appears in order, under a You or Noxtua heading.
5. The chat has no text to export
How to tell: You see This chat has nothing to export yet.
The chat has no messages with text. This happens when a chat was created but never used, or when every reply failed.
Open the chat and send a message.
Wait for Noxtua's answer.
Export again.
Check: A Word file is created, starting with the chat title.
6. Your connection or session dropped during the export
How to tell: You see Could not export this chat. or Could not export the document.
The export couldn't load the chat or document, or it couldn't build the file.
Check that you are online and that other pages in Noxtua still load.
Reload the page. If you are asked to sign in, sign in again.
Export again.
Check: The file downloads without an error message. If the error reoccurs for the same chat or document, contact support (see below).
7. Your browser or company policy blocks the download
How to tell: The browser shows a blocked or failed download, or Chrome/Edge never offers a Save as window even though other sites do.
Click the blocked download in your browser's Downloads list and choose Keep or Allow, if offered.
Make sure your browser allows downloads from your Noxtua address.
If your device is managed by IT, ask them to allow .docx downloads from your Noxtua address. If the Save as window is turned off by policy, files still go to the Downloads folder.
Check: The file appears in your Downloads folder, or the message Saved to your computer appears.
8. You opened an older copy of the file
How to tell: The file is missing recent edits, or the file name ends in (1), (2), and so on.
Browsers add a number when a file with the same name already exists. The file name is the chat or document title.
Sort your Downloads folder by date, newest first.
Open the most recent file.
Delete or rename older copies to avoid mixing them up.
Check: The file you opened has today's date and time and includes the latest edits.
9. The font or file name looks different
How to tell: The text isn't in your usual font, or the file name doesn't match the chat title.
Font: Chat exports use Calibri for text and Consolas for code. LibreOffice and Google Docs replace a missing Calibri with a font of the same size, so the layout doesn't shift. To use your house font, select all text in Word and change it.
File name: Characters that aren't allowed in file names (
\ / : * ? " < > |) are replaced with spaces, and titles are shortened to 80 characters. An untitled chat is saved as Chat.docx. Rename the file after saving if needed.
Check: The document reads correctly in your font, and you can find it under its new name.
Prevent it next time
Export after the reply finishes. Wait until Noxtua has stopped working before exporting a chat or document.
Use Chrome or Edge if you want to select the folder. They open a Save as window and confirm with Saved to your computer.
Give chats a clear title. The title becomes the file name, so a short, unique title is easy to find and helps avoid (1) copies.
Set Word's markup view before you share. Choose No Markup, or accept or reject changes, before sending a downloaded document to someone who doesn't need the redline.
Ask IT to allow downloads. If your device is managed, ask IT to allow .docx downloads from your Noxtua address.
